A Venice Pilgrimage: Morning Mass at San Marco & Island Hopping {#1 in the Series}

Dear Reader, This is #1 in our series of travelogues all around Italy, the UK, and Ireland from October 2024 through June 2025. This opening one largely lets the pictures speak. The others share our experiences in prose and photos. Enjoy!

Hi and love from our Venice Pilgrimage.

This morning, I was prepared with my Dramamine for lots of “vaporetto” (water boat) rides to different Venetian islands! (Breakfast of Champions!) The taller beverage is a latte macchiato (hot milk with a dash of espresso).  It’s what I have every day. John’s an Americano man (espresso with hot water).

We prayed for everyone on our prayer lists before St. Mark’s tomb at the famous basilica. Then after early Mass there, we took a vaporetto for a day trip to the islands of Murano of glassblowing fame and Burano, a fishing village filled with brightly colored houses, shops, and restaurants.

St. Mark’s tomb under altar.

Part of the cast exterior of San Marco basilica. The bird was a little kiss from God.

Classic Venice.

Bridge of Sighs where prisoners were walked through before being executed on the other side — they sighed at one last look out the windows at Venice.

We followed this lovely lady into Mass.  She reminded me of Sr. Mary Catherine (R.I.P.) from high school.

Murano chandelier in hotel.

On Burano island.  We soon shed our coats/long sleeves.
