Stations of the Cross this Lenten Season

Stations of the Cross - Knock Shrine, Ireland

We were blessed to spend Ash Wednesday in Knock, Ireland, the site of the 1879 apparition and now an international Eucharistic and Marian shrine. In addition to Mass, Confession, and Adoration, we prayed the Stations of the Cross.

In 1879, Mary, Saint Joseph, Saint John the Evangelist, and a lamb appeared just outside the parish church, witnessed by more than 15 villagers. Since then, Knock has been a pilgrimage site, bringing thousands from across the world to venerate Our Lady of Knock.

We also prayed for those on our prayer list in the Apparition Chapel.

The 14th Station - Jesus is laid in the tomb, written in Gaelic.

Stations of the Cross - Balintubber Abbey, Ireland

Ballintubber Abbey, in western Ireland, is known for holding Mass every day for the past 800 years, including many years without a roof, and has a very unique Way of the Cross.

This path, known in Gaelic as “Tóchar Chriost”, or Christ’s Journey, circles the church. At first, the sculptures appear to be extremely weathered so as to be barely recognizable, but we learned that each stone is natural and was brought up out of a lake by the local priest and assembled on the grounds to form the Stations.

The 6th Station - Verionica wipes the Face of Jesus.
The 8th Station - Jesus comforts the women of Jerusalem.

Stations of the Cross - Fatima, Portugal

We have previously posted about the Stations of the Cross, including a comprehensive prayer guide, from our pilgrimage to Fatima a few years ago:

Praying Fatima’s Stations of the Cross.

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.

Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.
