Via Francigena: Monteriggioni to Siena

Painful Heels, Missed Bus, and the Kindness of Strangers

Miles and miles of Tuscan hills finally caught up with my heels. I had 2 huge blisters, on each foot.  I barely made it to Monteriggioni the day before, and the pain was worse this morning.

Twelve miles to walk to Siena wasn’t going to happen this day. I had already booked non-refundable room there, so we decided to take the bus.  I purchased tickets in time to catch the 10 am bus, but that one was early. The driver waved as I hobbled towards the bus stop.  There was another bus at 2:00 pm, so we took this as a sign to visit the Monteriggioni old town.

After seeing the town, a German gentleman asked about the drone that I was using. Then, he saw me hobbling around with the painful heels, and backpack, and insisted that we allow him, his wife, and cute labradoodle, to drive us to Siena.  That felt weird, but we thought that something brought this couple to meet us at that point in time, so we decided to accept help from the strangers.

Santa Maria Assunta

Interior of Santa Maria Assunta.

Santa Maria Assunta is a small, simple, church in old Monteriggioni. There was a very tasteful chant music playing in the background, along with a steady stream of visitors popping in to take a picture or say a prayer.  The perfect place for us to take out the prayer list and pray.
